Polokwane baton twirler off to World Champs

Rosa Bopape has been selected to represent South Africa at the Majorette World Championships in Cape Town.

POLOKWANE – Rosa Bopape from Nirvana, a dedicated baton twirler within the drum majorettes, has been selected to represent South Africa at the Majorette World Championships, which will be held in Cape Town in September.

As a member of The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (Samca) national team, Bopape will have the opportunity to showcase her skills on an international stage from September 19-22.

Matthew Higgs, a coach with Samca, emphasised the significance of this honour.

“This is the highest recognition our athletes can achieve. They are not only representing their local teams and schools but also their country,” Higgs said.

The next training camp is set for September 15-18 in Cape Town, where athletes will prepare for the world championships.

Bopape’s journey in majorettes began at the age of eight in 2017, and she has since excelled in the sport. She earned her Limpopo Majorette Cheerleading Association (Limca) provincial colours in 2022 and her Samca national colours in 2023. Now, as one of Limpopo’s top majorettes, she is excited about this prestigious opportunity.

“I would also like to thank Caroline Thema, the founder of Caroline Thema Foundation in ensuring that drum majorettes is to be taken into consideration, and also encouraging young ones to take part in the sport within the communities and schools. I’m humbled for such an opportunity and achievement. It has always been my dream to represent my country. To make my dream possible, I would appreciate any assistance with the costs of the championships so that I can make my country proud,” Bopape said.

Off the field, Bopape is recognised for her dedication, humility, and leadership, serving as a role model in her community and at Taxila Secondary School.

Samca is seeking public support to help cover the costs associated with the championships and to ensure that athletes like Bopape can balance their academic responsibilities with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
