LIMPOPO – Hard work and dedication have finally paid off for two talented soccer players, Maanda Ramadwa (15) and Ambani Raphadana (14), from Sinthumule High School, who have been selected for the CAF South Africa School Football Championship’s u/15 team.
The team will compete in Namibia from 9-12 September.
Maanda, a Gr 9 learner from Ramantsha, and Ambani, a Gr 8 learner from Tshiozwi, were chosen during the national school selection held at Wits University in Johannesburg on July 9-10.
Ambani plays as a midfielder, while Maanda is a goalkeeper.
The two also play together for Sinthumulekutama Ladies, a team currently leading Stream B of the SAFA Limpopo Sasol Women’s League.
Ambani, who started playing soccer with boys on the streets, shared her dreams of playing for Banyana Banyana one day.
She described her call-up to the national u/15 team as a significant step toward achieving that goal.
“This achievement is an honour for me, my family, school, and club,” she said. “I was encouraged by my parents to pursue my dreams.”
Maanda expressed her excitement at being selected to represent South Africa and vowed not to disappoint her parents, teachers, and community.
Both girls thanked their Sinthumulekutama team and their families for supporting their soccer journeys, despite the belief that soccer is for boys.
Sinthumule High School coach, Caswell Mohale, highlighted the importance of the games in developing girls’ soccer and promoting women’s football in rural areas.
“We are proud to have produced two young girls who will represent South Africa, our school, and Limpopo on the African stage. Their talent and strength are undeniable, and we are thrilled to see them achieve this success.”
He also praised the support from the school, parents, and coaches who have guided and trained the players.
He urged the girls’ parents to continue providing moral support as their daughters embark on this incredible journey.
