Vhembe artist rises in gospel industry

Luckson, a rising gospel star, has gone from playing empty tins as a child to sharing the stage with Benjamin Dube and collaborating with top artists.

LIMPOPO – Bekiswayo Lucky Mdhluli, affectionately known as Luckson, hails from Vuwani Tshitungulwane Mirenzheni village in the Vhembe district, and he’s steadily making his mark in the gospel music scene.

His passion for music began at the young age of 10, with influential figures such as Thabo Mdhluli, Lufuno Buda, and Lufuno Dagada serving as his role models.

Now 41 years old, Luckson is not only a gospel artist but also a talented songwriter, composer, dancer, and music producer. His journey in the music industry started in 1999, and he’s never looked back.

Recently, Luckson signed a recording deal with Primetainment, a Gauteng-based studio, marking a significant step in his career.

Reflecting on his early days, Luckson shared with CV that his love for music was evident even as a child.

“I used to play empty tins, painting them and trying to make beats while sitting under a fig tree,” he said.

It was gospel icon Lufuno Buda Mudau who discovered his talent and recruited him to join a community choir between 1999 and 2000.

From there, Luckson joined the Full Gospel Church Choir and later became part of the SAPS choir in Sibasa, where he spent nearly nine years.

Another key figure in Luckson’s career development is Lufuno Dagada, who taught him to sing using staff notation.

After leaving the SAPS choir, Luckson became the worship team leader for Pastor Brownie Makhuvha Ministries in Thohoyandou.

It was during this time that Masedi Tshilongo, with the ABC Band, discovered him, leading to the release of his first album, ‘Akekho o Fana Nae’.

Luckson’s love for gospel music stems from a deep spiritual calling.

“My love for gospel music is inspired by the knowledge of why I have the gift. Had I not found myself in the house of the Lord, I wouldn’t have known the mission God had for me,” he shared.

A highlight of Luckson’s career was sharing the stage with renowned gospel artist Benjamin Dube.

He was also featured on two of Lufuno Dagada’s projects and recorded his first live album, ‘Khomelela Ka Xikwembu’ (Hold on to the Lord), in 2013 at Thohoyandou Town Hall.

This project included collaborations with well-known artists such as Maumela Mahuwa, also known as Vho-Suzan from the Venda soap opera, Muvhango.

That same year, he was nominated for Best Engineered Song at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, where he also delivered a live performance.

Since signing with Primetainment, Luckson has seen significant growth in his music career. He has recorded songs including ‘Hasha’, ‘Tshifhinga’, ‘Esiphambanweni’, and ‘Barapara’ and recently released a track titled ‘Makanana Jesu’, featuring Primetainment artists Big Ropza and Tshego Judah.

Looking ahead, Luckson hopes to collaborate with more renowned artists, including Cyria the Community.
