LIMPOPO – Community members from Ha-Mulima Likhade village near Louis Trichardt in the Vhembe district received food parcels from the MEC for Social Development, Florence Radzilani last Wednesday.
She stressed the importance of supporting vulnerable households and called for greater efforts to combat poverty.
“This event is part of our commitment to eradicating poverty and hunger, which remain our biggest challenges. Poverty is not just a statistic but a reality for many families who struggle to find hope and sustenance every day,” she said.
She acknowledged that rural poverty, particularly among women, is a pressing issue in South Africa.
“Rural women often bear the brunt of poverty, juggling multiple responsibilities such as raising children, managing households, and engaging in agriculture, all while facing systemic barriers that limit their access to resources and opportunities.”
The food parcel distribution coincided with Women’s Month, a time to recognise and celebrate the strength and resilience of women.
Radzilani also encouraged collaboration between government, NGOs, and the private sector to create sustainable solutions for food security.
She praised the business community in Limpopo for their willingness to assist, noting recent donations of wheelchairs from local businesspeople
“Their kindness and generosity show that together, we can address these social issues.”
The Department of Social Development plans to increase its food security programme, raising the number of households receiving assistance from 4 550 to 7 200.
“We are serious about this commitment. The fight against hunger requires long-term dedication and structural change,” Radzilani concluded.
