10 foreign nationals die in late-night N1 bus incident

A new-to-the-job bus driver is said to have driven over a traffic circle in Makhado at a high speed and overturned, leaving 10 foreign nationals dead and others injured.

POLOKWANE – Ten foreign nationals died in a bus incident on the N1 near Makhado on Tuesday night.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety reports that the incident took place at 3 Miles on the N1 and that the bus was en-route to Johannesburg from Zimbabwe.

“The bus is said to have driven over the last traffic circle from Makhado towards Polokwane at a high speed, lost control and overturned. Five male and five female foreign nationals were killed and passengers injured,” said Phuti Lekganyane, acting spokesperson to the transport MEC.

Lekganyane added that the bus driver is new and not familiar with surroundings.

“The scene has been cleared and the injured passengers have been taken to various hospitals in Makhado,” he said.

MEC Violet Mathye sent messages of condolences to the deceased’s families and has also urged motorists to be alert of their surroundings and drive with caution, at all times.
