Former Univen vice-chancellor Prof Nkondo mourned

Nkondo, a respected scholar in social policy, national strategy development, and discourse analysis, has passed at 83.

LIMPOPO – The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba expressed sadness upon receiving the news of the passing of Prof Muxe Nkondo, former vice-chancellor of the University of Venda (Univen) and the University of Limpopo on August 18 at the age of 83.

On behalf of the people of Limpopo, Ramathuba extended her deepest condolences to Nkondo’s family, friends and the nation.

“He was a visionary leader whose contributions to society, particularly in the field of education, have left an indelible mark. His tenure as vice-chancellor and principal at the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda is remembered for his transformative leadership and his focus on advancing science and technology at Univen, creating a lasting legacy in the academic community,” a statement reads.

Beyond his academic achievements, Nkondo was a respected scholar in social policy, national strategy development, and discourse analysis, with his influence extending well beyond the universities he led.

Ramathuba highlighted his pivotal role as the first SRC president of the University of Limpopo, noting that his leadership has shaped the minds and characters of many, leaving a legacy that will inspire future generations.

Former Univen SRC president, Rudzani Musheou, described Nkondo as a visionary leader who played a crucial role in ensuring Univen’s independence as a university focused on science and technology, resisting proposals to merge it with other institutions.

In November 2022, Nkondo was honoured with the Golden Shield Heritage Award by the South African National Heritage Council.

His contributions to education and society will be remembered and cherished.
