Polokwane food stall owner funds law degree

Rethabile Nkwana, the owner of Rethabile Foods, now known as The Sandwich Guy, started his street food venture to fund his law degree.

POLOKWANE – Motorists who frequently pass the corner of Potgieter Avenue and General Viljoen Street will be familiar with the friendly face of Rethabile Nkwana (34) selling sandwiches from his cooler box.

Owner of Rethabile Foods, Nkwana, now known as The Sandwich Guy started his street food venture to fund his law studies.

Thanks to the support of motorists and pedestrians in the area, Nkwana enrolled for a LLB degree through Unisa, a degree he is set to complete next year.

While continuing his studies, Nkwana’s passion for food and business remains strong.

He now operates a food stall on College Avenue near the local college, where he sells a variety of meals, including pap with different types of meat, vegetables, gravy, refreshments and snacks.

“I’m very grateful to all my customers who supported my sandwich business as it allowed me to save for my studies and also buy stock to start my food business,” Nkwana said.

He has also created employment for three residents who assist with cooking and preparations. He oversees the final product before it reaches customers.

“Now, my employees can also provide for their families with the profit we make from our business.”

Looking to the future, Nkwana dreams of expanding his business into a restaurant in one of Polokwane’s malls or the CBD.

“In the next four to five years, I see myself as the owner of a top restaurant in Polokwane.”

He says he is aware of the challenges that come with entrepreneurship, particularly the temptation to spend profit as personal income.

“When you make money from your business, understand that it’s not personal money because there are overheads and fluctuations. Invest it back into your business. I overcame these challenges through diligent bookkeeping and by trusting in God for the provision of customers. When you’re an entrepreneur, trusting God is the foundation.”
