LIMPOPO – The battle against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) gained significant momentum in the Thulamela Municipality in Thohoyandou as the Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba launched the multi-disciplinary Operation Basadi at Thavhani Mall on Thursday.

The campaign comes at a crucial time, with Thulamela leading the provincial crime statistics in rape, GBV and femicide cases.

The event saw the participation of key provincial leaders, including the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

Ramathuba expressed deep concern over the high rates of GBV and femicide in Thulamela, once renowned for producing top scholars including Prof Tshilidzi Marwala and Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni. “Thulamela Municipality, known for its academic excellence, now leads the country’s cases of rape and GBV. I urge perpetrators to stop these heinous acts or face the full force of the law,” she stated.

She highlighted the urgency for the police to prioritise rape cases, criticising the current system where victims of sexual violence are often sidelined in favour of other emergencies. She stressed the importance of treating GBV cases with the seriousness they deserve, particularly within healthcare and law enforcement settings.

Ramathuba warned that police officers who fail to properly investigate GBV cases would face the consequences.
