In recognition of his bravery, Mothatha received a letter of appreciation from the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu. The letter praised his dedication to duty, even while off duty, noting that his actions brought honour to the South African Police Service.

“I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your exceptional bravery and dedication to duty, even while off duty, which has brought honour to the service,” the letter read.

The minister also extended his wishes for a full and speedy recovery: “Please know that you have the full support and appreciation of the ministry, your colleagues, and the entire community during this time. The suspect has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder and theft out of a motor vehicle.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe condemned the attack, stressing that violence against law enforcement officers would not be tolerated.

“We will not tolerate such barbaric acts of violence against our members. The positive response of our community members is highly commendable, and we are forever indebted to them for not turning a blind eye to the situation but assisting our member. We will ensure the suspect faces the full might of the law,” Hadebe said.
