Northern Academy head advises matrics on upcoming exams

The executive head at Northern Academy stressed the importance of avoiding common studying pitfalls and the need for a structured approach to studying.

POLOKWANE – Chris Janse van Rensburg, the executive head at Northern Academy, has urged the 2024 matric class to prepare diligently for their upcoming trial and final examinations.

Speaking at a special assembly for the matriculants on July 25, Van Rensburg stressed the importance of avoiding common studying pitfalls such as studying for memorisation, using a disorganised approach, and cramming before exams.

Janse van Rensburg said learners who study solely for memorisation miss out on making valuable connections between concepts from past or future exams.

“You can overcome this hurdle by using strategic tools, like content maps, to relate information and apply it tangibly, fostering a deeper understanding,” he advised.

He also stressed the need for a structured approach to studying.

“Learners should take effective and organised notes during class and homework sessions. It’s important to incorporate regular breaks, taking 10 to 25-minute breaks after 50 to 90 minutes of studying, and ensure they get eight hours of sleep,” he said.

Janse van Rensburg advised against cramming the night before exams, recommending that learners start studying early and review their material incrementally over time to better retain knowledge and maintain motivation. He also emphasised the importance of having a study plan.

“Matriculants should create a plan that sets goals and outlines tasks for each study session. They must avoid procrastination by maintaining a strict agenda and starting assignments at least a week before their due date,” he stated.

He shared additional study tips, including taking handwritten notes, summarising each slide or topic, reviewing notes at night, and testing their recall of the material.
Head girl Luyanda Linda expressed confidence in the readiness of her peers for the trial examinations.

“We are more than ready for the examinations. Most of the matriculants started as early as January and are eager to write the papers,” she said.

All matriculants in the province are scheduled to sit for their trial examinations from August 19 to September 13. The final examinations are slated for October and November.
