Secondary school learners and young professionals from across Limpopo gathered at The Ranch Resort to engage with officials from the Water and Sanitation Department and Lepelle Northern Water.

POLOKWANE – Hope is on the horizon for improved water and sanitation services in Limpopo, fuelled by the enthusiasm of young people who are determined to address the current challenges through research and development.

From Monday through Thursday, secondary school learners and young professionals from across Limpopo gathered at The Ranch Resort to engage with officials from the Water and Sanitation Department (DWS) and Lepelle Northern Water (LNW), the entity responsible for water supply in Polokwane and surrounding areas.

This National Youth Indaba provided a platform for discussions on the state of water and sanitation services and sought innovative solutions for improvement.

The event featured various stakeholders, including universities and young professionals, who contributed to the dialogue.

LNW board chairperson Dr Nndweleni Mphephu encouraged participants to collaborate with professionals and develop strategies to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure.

Lepelle Northern Water board chairperson Dr Nndweleni Mphephu encourages youths to collaborate with professionals and develop strategies to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure.

Despite recent efforts, including a R86m investment by the department in March for groundwater projects and the completion of the Seshego Water Treatment Plant – which adds 10 million litres per day to the city’s supply – water challenges persist.

The Sandriver North Water Treatment Works is set to provide an additional 18 million litres per day by December 2024.

Mphephu highlighted that addressing water issues requires permanent solutions such as advanced water purification systems and wastewater management plants.
