Removal of underground cables delays road expansion in Seshego

POLOKWANE – The extension of entrance roads into Seshego, particularly the Ditlou Crossing project next to Nelson Mandela Drive, has been stalled due to challenges with the careful removal of underground electrical cables.

Residents and local officials, including Mayor John Mpe, have voiced concerns over the prolonged duration of the project, which began in mid-2023.

The project aims to enhance the main entry point into Seshego, benefitting the Leeto La Polokwane buses and providing additional access options to alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours.

Currently, road users are forced to use alternative entry points due to the ongoing construction, which has also affected the installation of traffic lights near the traffic circle.

The slow progress has led to frustration among some residents, with complaints about the pace of work and employment issues arising from local protests.

While the project has created job opportunities, the dissatisfaction with the delays persists.

During a site visit last Friday, Mpe expressed his concerns about the slow progress, highlighting the complications encountered with the removal of electrical cables.

“We are not very pleased with the contractor’s performance,” Mpe stated.

“The cables required specialised handling, and we needed to intervene to set up an action plan to oversee the project more effectively.”

Mpe indicated that he has requested updated timelines from the project stakeholders to better understand the expected completion date and ensure that the project returns to a timely pace.
