Soup kitchen in Seshego targeted by thieves

A member of the soup kitchen told BONUS that the break in has affected refrigeration of food and their ability to cook and feed around 350 people daily.

POLOKWANE – Beneficiaries of the renowned soup kitchen at Masakaneng, Zone 1 in Seshego, have been deeply impacted by the theft of essential items that kept the establishment running smoothly.

On the night of July 11, thieves dismantled parts of the kitchen made from sharpened timber and stole an inverter and batteries used to power electronic items.

Despite ongoing police investigations, no arrests had been made by this past Monday.

Mpho Ramaoka, a member of the soup kitchen, explained to BONUS that the theft has made it complicated to refrigerate food and cook meals, affecting their ability to feed approximately 350 people daily without fail.

In response to the incident, the soup kitchen now relies on a power generator for refrigeration and boiling water, making fires on the ground to cook, and using gas sparingly to cut costs.

Safety forums, including the Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism led by Vincent Kunutu, have been assisting in the search for the stolen items but have had no success so far.

Leader Julius Malema, near whose house the soup kitchen is located in Masakaneng, has shown support by pinning a post on his social media since June 21, calling for donations of any kind to support those benefitting from the soup kitchen’s services.

To assist, patrons are asked to contact Thabang at 065 958 7043 or Mpho at 069 115 9793.
