Thohoyandou photographer’s picture-perfect career

From engineer to photographer, Ritondeni Nemakonde turned his passion into a career, capturing life's moments.

LIMPOPO – “Being a professional photographer is not just a job but a good opportunity to embrace my passion, love, confidence, technical skills, and creativity through the lens,” said Ritondeni Nemakonde, from Fondwe village outside Thohoyandou, known for his photographic brand, Mukoni Photography.

Nemakonde’s photography journey began in 2017.

“After finishing my diploma in civil engineering, I spent almost a year without a job, which is when my passion for taking photos escalated. I didn’t, however, have enough money to buy a camera, but I didn’t give up. Instead, I went out and looked for odd jobs to save money to buy a camera. My first camera helped me to shape my photographic skills as I explored the craft. I didn’t have proper photography equipment, but I strived to get the right ones,” said Nemakonde.

He acknowledged that being a business owner is not always easy.

“I usually set out a plan for business, work at a certain time to deliver to clients, take some time off from business, and practice mindfulness. As a photographer, many challenges arise, but you must balance your work. To overcome these challenges, I am confident that I am better than yesterday,” he said.

His secret to success lies in self-belief, innovation, taking risks, personal responsibility, thinking outside the box, and having a can-do attitude.

“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. Small steps lead to big things, and dreaming about your own business is one of those first small steps. Put your best foot forward every step of the way, and one day you will be grateful for the solid foundation you have laid,” he said.

He also emphasised that photography shows different perspectives and helps people connect.

“Perhaps the biggest importance of photography is the ability to preserve memories. I have taken lots of photos during various occasions. I receive positive feedback from the community. I capture every photo with the aim of telling a story without using words,” he concluded.

Nemakonde attended primary school at Fondwe Primary School, matriculated at Thohoyandou Technical High School.
