Limpopo learner killed in tavern brawl

Madimbo father mourns the loss of his son as Azwifani Mamengwa (17) was stabbed to death in a tavern fight.

LIMPOPO – A GR 11 learner, Azwifani Mamengwa (17), was tragically stabbed to death while at a tavern in Madimbo near Musina, in the early hours of July 7.

Although the details surrounding his death were unclear at the time of publication, his father, Killer Mudau, said that Azwifani had gone to a nearby tavern with a friend.

According to the police report, an argument ensued which escalated into a physical fight, during which he was stabbed in the chest and under his left arm with a sharp object. He died at the scene.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy. Azwifani was a handsome young boy. It is really unacceptable what happened, and we hope that whoever was behind his death faces the full force of the law,” said Mudau.

He had gone to the scene soon after hearing that his son had been attacked. On his arrival, Azwifani was lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds, he said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident, saying a case of murder had been opened.

A suspect who had been on the run was arrested on July 10.
