Winter school programme boosts academic chances

Polokwane learners sacrifice holidays for intensive winter classes, focusing on academic improvement and peer support ahead of final exams.

POLOKWANE – High school learners across the city have given up their holiday to attend winter enrichment classes in preparation for their final year examinations.

Starting from June 17, these classes are held at various secondary schools, providing learners with intensive day-to-day lessons.

During this time, learners focus on dissecting and answering their common mid-year examination papers and revising key subjects.

Group work is emphasised, allowing learners who did not achieve desired results in their mid-year exams to receive peer support and find solutions to their academic challenges.

Biddy Ratale, the manager for the Polokwane Circuit, is encouraging matriculants to take full advantage of the winter enrichment classes.

“These classes are crucial as they significantly benefit the learners. They shouldn’t see this as a punishment but rather an opportunity to improve their term results,” Ratale stated.

Beyond academic improvement, Ratale highlighted the social benefits of the programme.

“Winter schools keep learners safe from social ills and potential criminal activities. When they are in class, they are away from negative influences,” she added.
