100-years-young, Mary celebrates faith, family, and longevity

Surrounded by family and friends, Mary celebrated her 100th birthday in Mashamba and reflected on a century of change.

LIMPOPO – A wave of joy and admiration filled the air in Mashamba as Mary ‘Mmbau’ Leshavhana celebrated her 100th birthday last month.

Family, friends, and the community gathered to honour the remarkable life of a woman who has seen a century of change.

The celebration, organised by her loving family, was a tribute to a matriarch who has witnessed and adapted to a world of transformation.

“It was only fitting to organise a party for her because she has reached an age that most people never attain. We love our grandmother, and she loves us too,” said her grandson, Mudau.

Despite using a walking stick, Leshavhana remains strong and optimistic about celebrating many more birthdays. Her eyesight may be fading, but her sharp hearing and keen mind keep her days vibrant.

She is a mother to seven, a grandmother to 39, and a great-grandmother to an astounding 146.

Reflecting on the past, she spoke of a time before modern conveniences.

“We used to travel long distances on foot because there were no cars,” she recalled. “The elders farmed for food, while young boys and girls like us looked after the goats and cows.”

She attributes her longevity to a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and a life of respect for elders.

“I have always enjoyed fruits and vegetables, and I have never tasted alcohol,” she emphasised. “I want future generations to learn about our history, and I believe I will live for many more years. If you live a clean life, God will bless you with a long life.”

Leshavhana is a devout member of the Zion Christian Church, crediting her faith for her long life.

“I am here today because of God’s will. Without God, I would not be celebrating my 100th birthday. Where there is God, there is life,” she declared.

Pastor Reuben Mashamba of the ZCC highlighted the significance of the celebration.

A family without elderly members lacks wisdom and guidance,” he remarked. He praised the family for their choice to care for Leshavhana at home, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment.
