Self-taught potter wants to inspire community

Through his dedication, Fhulufhelo has managed to support his four children and maintain a steady focus on his work.

LIMPOPO – Fhulufhelo Madzhiga, a self-taught and talented potter from Tswinga village near Thohoyandou, has a mission to make a difference using his skills.

At 48 years old, Madzhiga dedicated the past 15 years to mastering the art of traditional pottery, a craft that has significantly improved his life and allowed him to preserve his cultural heritage.

Madzhiga’s journey into pottery began out of necessity and passion.

“It took me two years of unpaid work to master this craft. I started making pottery after struggling to find a job, realising that I could use my skills to sustain myself and my family,” he explained.

Through his dedication, he has managed to support his four children and maintain a steady focus on his work.

Despite initial challenges and financial constraints, Madzhiga’s family has always been supportive of his artistic pursuits.

“Working as a potter was difficult at first because I didn’t know what to expect from people. There were bad days when my creations didn’t meet expectations. However, I enjoy being creative and adding my own twist to designs, which sometimes made it hard to follow orders,” he shared.

Over time, Madzhiga’s persistence paid off, providing him with valuable knowledge and skills.

“The challenges I faced were beneficial, as they helped me discover my capabilities. This year, I decided to expand my horizons and joined Thohoyandou Arts and Culture,” he said.

Now, Madzhiga is eager to share his knowledge with the younger generation in his community.

“I want to pass on my skills to young people here, but the lack of funds has been a barrier to making this dream a reality,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Madzhiga aspires to see his pottery in major retail stores. “I wish to sell my pottery to big retail stores,” he said, expressing his hope for broader recognition and success.
