PEMPS’ Mam Karen cherishes decades of teaching

Serving as the Gr R head at PEMPS since 2004, Adlem cherishes her role, which allows her to remain actively involved in teaching.

POLOKWANE – Karen Adlem, a seasoned teacher with a career spanning over three decades, discovered her life’s calling when she began teaching pre-primary grades in 1987.

Serving as the Gr R head at Pietersburg English Medium Primary School since 2004, Adlem cherishes her role, which she says allows her to remain actively involved in teaching rather than being confined to administrative duties.

Reflecting on her journey, Adlem expressed her gratitude for being in a position that fuels her passion.

“Being office-bound exposes you to only the negative. You spend the day dealing with problem parents, problem learners, and my passion would have died. I would much rather fill up my hours after school and do all the admin. Being part of the children’s lives is what keeps me going,” she says.

Adlem’s love for teaching young children stems from her belief in the importance of laying a solid foundation for future learning.

“Working with the learners, you can already determine where their talents and potential lie so that they can hone that,” she explained.

The feedback from parents and the genuine affection of the children are among her greatest rewards.

“Children at this age are so innocent and true to their feelings. I admire them and the love they have. The moment they step into my class, they become one of my children.” Throughout her illustrious career, Adlem has forged enduring bonds with her learners, often being invited to weddings, baptisms and other significant milestones in their lives.

“I stay part of the families because I make these children mine. I see them longer and for more hours than their parents do. My role is more than just teaching; I am preparing them for life,” she says. Adlem also highlighted the pivotal role of a teacher’s approach in a child’s development.

“A teacher’s approach can make or break a child. It’s important to keep up the spirit. Teachers should not get discouraged by the long hours, the admin, and activities. If you are born with a purpose and you live your purpose, your work will not be a job for you. This applies to any profession,” she concluded.
