Lion and zebra killed in poaching incident at Letaba Ranch

The incident, which saw the killing of two lions and a zebra, took place in the Genoeg Camp inside the Letaba Ranch at midnight last Sunday (April 21). 

LIMPOPO – The police in Lulekani in the Mopani District have launched a manhunt for the suspect(s) responsible for the illegal poaching of protected wildllife.

The incident, which saw the killing of two lions and a zebra, took place in the Genoeg Camp inside the Letaba Ranch at midnight last Sunday (April 21).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said an employee was asleep on the premises when he heard a commotion with lions and hyenas not far from the camp.

“The employee went to investigate what he had heard when he got up early that morning. While walking, he discovered two dead lions and a dead zebra caught by wiresnare. One hyena was also found trapped but still alive,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the employee managed to free and rescue the protected animal.

“Anyone with information that can assist with the investigations should urgently contact the Investigating Officer Eric Nkuna on 0826577297, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, the nearest police station or via the MySAPSApp,” his statement read.
