Teenage girl (16) among two arrested for robbery in Tzaneen

A group of four armed suspects robbed two hitchhikers of their belongings before two were arrested and a manhunt launched for the others.

LIMPOPO – A 16-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man will appear before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of robbery with a firearm and possession of suspected stolen properties.

The duo were among a group of four and were arrested following an armed robbery on Saturday evening (April 20) in which two hitchhikers were robbed at gunpoint of their belongings.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the victims hitchhiked a white Toyota Avanza on the R71 with three men and a teenage girl occupying the vehicle.

“Along the way, the vehicle turned towards Bolobedu and the suspects pointed their firearms demanding cash. They then robbed the two women of their belongings which included cellphones, cash and jewellery. The suspects drove off and left the victims stranded,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the victims were assisted by a passerby who immediately notified the police.

“Initial investigations commenced which led to the swift arrest of two of the suspects within the vicinity. During the arrest, one robbed cellphone and nine other cellphones suspected to have been robbed as well were confiscated,” he said.
