Limpopo man arrested for alleged brutal murder of his mother

The suspect's neighbours allege that he had an argument with his mother before carrying her lifeless body in a wheelbarrow.

LIMPOPO – A 42-year-old man will appear before the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder following his arrest on Tuesday morning.

The man was arrested in in Mamaila village, Sekgosese, for allegedly killing his 69-year-old mother and carrying her dead body in a wheelbarrow.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect’s neighbours heard him arguing and insulting his mother prior to the crime.

“The suspect is said to have called one of his neighbours to see what he was carrying in the wheelbarrow. Upon checking, it was discovered that it was his mother’s lifeless body,” his statement reads.

The community then mobilised and attacked the suspect before police were notified.

“Police found the victim’s body wrapped in a blanket in a steel bath in the wheelbarrow. Emergency services were also summoned to the scene,” he says.

The female victim was certified dead at the scene and identified as Mamaila Moloi Matele (69).

Ledwaba added that the police rescued the male victim from the hands of the community and he was rushed to hospital where he was arrested and will remain under police guard.

“The circumstances surrounding this murder are currently being investigated.”

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest but once again warned against vigilantism and taking the law into ones own hands.

“Communities should refrain from engaging in violence when faced with domestic challenges and to rather resolve issues amicably. Any differences should be addressed within the confines of the law and not take the law into own hands,” she stresses.
