Amputee Mosa lives beyond his disability

Avid soccer player and amputee Mosa Sefoka (23) says one should never give up on your dreams or let anything discourage you from doing what you love.

POLOKWANE – TUT Polokwane campus student and amputee Mosa Sefoka (23) is a soccer player who wants to inspire others like him not to have doubts about the careers they want to pursue.

“My parents explained to me that in 2001 when I was 11 months old, we were involved in vehicle accident. Fortunately, my mom Khomotso and dad Dolphy were not physically injured in the accident, but I hurt my leg badly,” he said.

He added that after a few surgeries, doctors came to the decision to amputate.

At the age of 10, Sefoka played soccer for various clubs in his community and also in high school, competing at different tournaments.

“For years since the accident and surgeries, everything felt normal to me as I don’t remember the day the accident happened although the pain is unbearable at times as there’s a protruding bone in the stump,” he said.

Sefoka will be completing his course next year.

“I have a strong passion for soccer. During the matches, I get to play with people who are able-bodied and I’m doing just fine. As an amputee I enjoy jogging along with them – patiently of course – which serves as proper therapy for me.”

He said he would like to advise amputees who are passionate about soccer that after a while, and with careful training, it gets better in time, and it’s even possible to run competitively with prosthetic legs.

“Never give up on your dreams or let anything discourage you from doing what you love.”

Sefoka needs to go for a surgery that will cost him roughly R20 000, that will ease the pain from his stump.

To be able to walk and run freely without pain and to pursue his dreams of being a soccer star, Sefoka pleads with the community or a Good Samaritan to donate any type of amount.

“I would like some exposure for people like me to express themselves and show that they’re beyond their disability. I’m hoping to get soccer equipment and kit from associations such as the South African Football Association.”
