Polokwane Muni puts measures in place to curb pest and reptile attacks

To address this, a grass cutting team has been bolstered with additional personnel, utilising slashers to ensure thorough coverage in all wards.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality annually partners with pest and reptile control service providers along with the Environment Department to maintain safe and hygienic environments for all residents.

Spokesperson Thipa Selala said the aim is to mitigate potential health risks associated with pests and reptiles.

This was in response to an earlier enquiry by BONUS in relation to measures put in place by the municipality to prevent pest and reptile attacks in Seshego.

In several areas, including the extensions, BONUS has witnessed municipal workers cutting grass in recent weeks.

Selala mentioned that substantial rainfall earlier this year increased the need for grass cutting across all areas, bi-weekly or tri-weekly, “until optimal levels are achieved”.

“This includes Seshego and Luthuli. To address this, our grass cutting team has been bolstered with additional personnel from the greening and cleaning programme, utilising slashers to ensure thorough coverage in all wards,” he explained.

BONUS learned through the DA’s Tiny Chidi that parents around the Luthuli area have sighted snakes in and around schools in the area.

“A snake was also killed by learners outside Luthuli Park Combined School in March,” she said.

Following this, it seemed the 2 000 Expanded Public Works Programme workers employed by the municipality responsible for grass cutting had not been dealing with the matter successfully, she said.

She said they would write to the municipal manager, Thuso Nemugumoni to request urgency in attending to the matter.
