Rape and pregnancy of Lebowakgomo teen to be investigated

POLOKWANE – The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has instructed the hunt down of the suspect responsible for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Makotse, Lebowakgomo.

The case, which is being handled by the Lebowakgomo Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, occurred on November 15, 2023 and resulted in the teenager falling pregnant.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the victim resides with her grandmother and was reportedly raped by an unidentified man near the high school in Zone B, Makotse.

“Overwhelmed by fear, the victim chose not to disclose the incident immediately and the circumstances surrounding the incident will be established as the investigation progresses. A case of rape was opened in March 2024, prompting a thorough police inquiry into the matter,” he said.

Hadebe condemned the incident and instructed the police to arrest the suspect and bring him before court to face the full might of the law.

“We urge anyone with information that could lead to the apprehension of the perpetrator to come forward and assist the police.
