How your nails reflect your overall health

Nail technician Gloria Mathabatha advises her clients to avoid biting their fingernails or removing the cuticles using their teeth or fingers.

POLOKWANE – Nail technician Gloria Mathabatha (27) from Seshego Zone 2 says nails reflect your overall health, which is why proper nail care is so important.

Mathabatha told BONUS that she usually works closely with local dermatologists to get advice about nail hygiene.

“I always advise my clients who like to keep it natural, to maintain their clean and dry nails. When they come in for a treatment I would cut the nails according to the natural length they prefer using sharp nail scissors or clippers, then I round the nails slightly at the tips for maximum strength, keeping the nails shaped and free of snags by filing with an emery board or nail filer. I will then add gel or nail polish if they need some colour added to their natural nails,” she said.

The most important advice Mathabatha gives her clients is to avoid biting their fingernails or removing the cuticles using their teeth or fingers.

“This habit damages the nails badly and they struggle to grow too. Don’t use your nails as a tool where you open cans, as it damages your nails,” she said.

When it comes to toe nails, Mathabatha advised that these should be trimmed regularly. “Keeping your toe nails short will minimise the risk of trauma and injury. When toenails are thick and difficult to cut, soak your feet in warm salt water, mix in one teaspoon of salt per litre of water and soak for five to 10 minutes. Lastly, wear shoes that fit properly, and alternate the shoes you wear each day. When it’s hot, wear flip flops when going out, as this reduces the risk of infections caused by a fungus that can get in your toenails. Remember that if your nails change, swell or cause pain, see your dermatologist as these can be signs of serious nail problems.”
