Limpopo learner (15) stabbed at school: Boy (17) in court

A boy was stabbed, allegedly by an older boy, after an altercation that transpired between the victim and suspect who reportedly produced a knife.

LIMPOPO – The police in Malamulele arrested a 17-year-old boy for the death of a 15-year-old learner at a secondary school in Mulamula village on Thursday.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said according to preliminary reports, an altercation ensued between the victim and suspect during a cultural event hosted by one of the secondary schools in the village, during which the older boy produced a knife.

Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Innocent Mchavi (15) succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

Ledwaba said they are investigating the circumstances that led to the event.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe denounced the act as  ‘deplorable’.

The suspect appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a murder charge.

Hadebe said the police assured their full commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into incidents such as these, while working towards justice for victims and their families.

The Education Department will release a comprehensive update once internal investigations are done.

“As a department we regret the incident and our heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved family. I am still making a plea to parents and all the interested parties to ensure that schools remain a conducive place for learning,’’ MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya remarked.

Psycho-social support will also be offered to the school community in light of the murder.
