‘Take ownership of your own education’ – says MEC

South Africa Youth Council secretary, Dester Mzamani said the number of young people who attended the event was exemplary.

LIMPOPO – Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC Rodgers Monama appealled to young people in the Collins Chabane Municipality to take ownership of their education, saying it is the only tool that can relieve them of poverty.

He spoke at the Youth Empowerment Seminar, themed The Emancipation for a Better Tomorrow Starts Now, which was recently hosted by the South African Youth Council at the Malamulele Community Hall.

He said as a government, they are mandated to provide support, learning resources and information that young people require.

“I am confident that working together with all stakeholders we can make our due contribution to the construction of a new world order.

“Since the dawn of democracy in 1994, South Africa has won global recognition by adopting world-acclaimed youth development policies, led by the ANC as the majority party in parliament. We have made commendable progress through carefully crafted programmes. Our beloved late former president, Nelson Mandela in his inauguration speech at the Union Buildings, described the youth as the most valued possession of the nation. Without them, there can be no future. Their needs are immense and urgent. If our youths are empowered and developed, our country will be on the path to prosperity,” said Monama.

His department is investing in the youth, he said, by partnering with the private sector in many projects.

“Together, we have donated science kits to primary school learners in Sekhukhune.”

He called on young people to embrace the fourth industrial revolution.

“Today’s economy depends on how we relate with technology so that you are able to understand and grasp the economies of the world. Limpopo has given us wealth in the form of mineral resources and we are home to more than 50 platinum group metals which we must use to transform the socio-economic conditions faced by our people.

“Through the Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone and the Fetakgomo Tubatse Industrial Park, we make life better for all,” he said.

South Africa Youth Council secretary, Dester Mzamani said the council the number of young people who attended the event was exemplary.

“More than 400 young people attended and we are surely on the right track with this youth empowerment seminar.”
