Life coach talks new year’s resolutions

Ntiyiso Love Shingange urged people who find it difficult to account to themselves to allow themselves to have someone who's going to be authoritative in their lives.

POLOKWANE – Are you able to stay on track with your resolutions in the new year?

If in doubt, it doesn’t hurt to consult a mentor or a life coach to assist you in achieving your resolutions.

Observer spoke to Ntiyiso Love Shingange, the director of Awakened Life Coaches and a neuro-linguistic programming practitioner, who explained that setting resolutions is an opportunity to try to do something differently.

“Sometimes, resolutions are the result of a person realising that they are not where they desire to be in life and that leads to them falling into the pressures of setting new year’s resolutions.” Shingange explained that resolutions are just wishes, until they are acted upon. “Everything requires sacrifice, be it a sacrifice of time, resources or depriving yourself of certain things. Are you willing to sacrifice the two hours that you spend watching TV when you get home and divert them into a goal or vision that you have?” she asked.

Shingange added that the lack of sacrifice is a major deterrent to achieving resolutions, as human nature seeks things that give us comfort and anything that creates feelings of discomfort, is conceived as bad and people subsequently convince themselves not to do it over a longer period of time.

Accountability is a major factor in accomplishing the resolutions we set for ourselves and it is sometimes difficult to hold ourselves accountable, she said.

“This is where a life coach comes in. There needs to be someone who holds you accountable to what you say you’re going to do,” she said.

She urged people who find it difficult to account to themselves to allow themselves to have someone who’s going to be authoritative in their lives. “They will be there to guide and support you to fulfill the goals that you want to fulfill. It is an investment in yourself and this investment can be in the form of a mentor, a life coach, a sports coach or whoever that related to what you want to achieve.”
