Fans revel in rain at Mapungubwe Festival

The cultural festival aims to promote the province’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

LIMPOPO – The rainy weather didn’t deter revellers from Polokwane and surrounds from enjoying the Mapungubwe Arts Festival held at the Polokwane Cricket Club on Saturday.

The festival, meant to promote the province’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, saw thousands of fans from Polokwane and across the province dancing in the rain to the tunes of their favourite artists.

The Mapungubwe Arts Festival was first hosted in 2002, known as the Melting Pot Festival.

This melting pot of the cultural diversity of the people of Limpopo changed its name in 2004 to the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

The festival kicked off on a high note with the entertainment line-up including Makhadzi, Dr Colbert Mukwevho, Dr Thomas Chauke, Mr Post, Takie Ndou, King Monada, Pleasure Tsa Manyalo, Master KG, Shebe-shebe, Kharishma, Dr Winnie Mashaba, Shibu Molomo, Lungi Ndala and Urban Matjila.

On the decks were Vhuyi da DJ, Q-scotch, Stylish DJ, and Kayzela DJ.

Arts and Culture MEC Nakedi Kekana thanked the people of Limpopo and visitors for attending the festival.

“We rely on our legends to continue guiding our young ones both morally and professionally. The Mapungubwe Music Festival brings the people of our province together, united in its diversity,”

Dr Colbert Mukwevho said it meant a lot to be part of the festival.

“The Mapungubwe Arts Festival is a good platform for musicians. It is a pleasure to say, we have been performing at these great shows almost every year. This is one of the greatest festivals that Limpopo has to offer.”
