UNILIM alumni raises funds for ‘missing middle’ students

The funds were aimed at students who come from family backgrounds that earn above the threshold set for government funding.

POLOKWANE – A total of R8.5m has been raised by the University of Limpopo (UniLim) alumni to help pay the fees of some “missing middle” students.

The term “missing middle” refers to students from financially struggling families, but who are not poor enough to access National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.

Among others, Standard Bank donated R5m, surpassing the R3m target almost three times, according to university spokesperson Johannes Selepe. Pledges were made during an exclusive gala dinner at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

Altogether 200 students who will benefit from the funds have already been identified, registrar Prof Kwena Masha mentioned.

He said the helping hand will be extended to more needy students going forward.

Masha also said the funds were aimed at students who come from family backgrounds that earn above the threshold set for government funding through NSFAS but could still not afford to pay for their own fees.

The banquet expected at least 150 guests with a seat at a table priced at R10 000 and a table for 10 reservations at R100 000.

Selepe said they received overwhelming support. The alumni and friends of the university donated between R10 000 to R5m.

Donald Selamolela, UL alumni and convocation president, said the initiative started on a good footing. He pleaded for more people to open their hearts to help ease the financial burden on students.

Mokgalong said more such events were imminent, to support other students.
