Dr von Ludwig places emphasis on vitamin D deficiency

In his monthly column, Dr Wilhelm von Ludwig talks about maintaining optimal vitamin D levels which is crucial for overall health and well-being.

POLOKWANE – Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health. It is very important for bone health, immunity, and overall well-being. However, despite its importance, many individuals here in sunny South Africa suffer from a deficiency in this essential vitamin.

One of the primary sources of vitamin D is sunlight. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it synthesizes vitamin D. Subsequently, modern lifestyles and indoor occupations (work from home, anyone?) limit sun exposure, reducing the body’s ability to produce vitamin D.

Diet is another way in which vitamin D insufficiency can creep up on you. Especially in people following strict vegetarian and vegan diets.

Older adults and individuals with darker skin tones are more prone to deficiency. In addition to these causes, certain medical conditions can also make one prone to a vitamin D deficiency.

The signs and symptoms of a shortage are vague and can easily be mistaken for stress. Tiredness, bone and muscle pain, weakness, depression or mood swings just to name a few, makes this condition hard to identify. In my own practice I’ve ramped up testing for Vitamin D and are still surprised at how often I see it.

To prevent or address vitamin D deficiency, get safe sun exposure. “Safe” is the key here. There are several sources promoting disinformation regarding vitamin D and sunscreen. Although sunscreen is a theoretical limitation on the amount of vitamin D that one can get from the sun, people apply way too little sunscreen to have any significant impact. Furthermore, sunscreen prevents the negative skin-effects of the sun, including cancer and aging.

Foods rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish, egg yolks and fortified dairy products are excellent dietary sources. Supplements are also available.

In conclusion, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is crucial for overall health and well-being. Awareness, adequate sunlight exposure, a balanced diet, and, if necessary, supplements can help combat and prevent the detrimental effects of vitamin D deficiency. Prioritizing this essential nutrient contributes significantly to a healthier life.

Remember, while the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, always be mindful of safe sun practices to prevent skin damage. If you suspect a deficiency, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance.
