Saselamani police search for escapees awaiting trial

Police has launched a manhunt for two of the three escapees who managed to escape custody on October 31.

LIMPOPO – Police in Saselamani near Xikundu village in Vhembe launched a manhunt for two of three trial-awaiting suspects, after they escaped from custody at the Saselamani police cells early on Thursday. Dumisani Chauke was re-arrested in Madonsi village in Malamulele on Sunday, but Mikateko Chauke (33) who was arrested for burglary and Jimmy Matirhele (32) who was arrested for burglary are still at large.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that the three men escaped from the facility.

Police are still searching for escapee Jimmy Matirhele.

“According to our information, the officers on duty at 03:26 while on patrol heard an unusual noise from the cells.

“Upon their arrival in the cells, they discovered that three inmates escaped through the roof.”

Mikateko Chauke is still on the run.

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe welcomed Chauke’s re-arrest and ordered the police to work with speed to recapture the remaining suspects.

Dumisani Chauke was re-arrested.

She called upon the community to provide any positive leads to ensure the apprehension of the escapees.
