Limpopo Government secures investment pledges of R37.5b

Premier Chupu Mathabatha said the outcome of the conference gave him confidence in the effort to create employment, eradicate poverty and eliminate uneven development.

POLOKWANE – Domestic and foreign investors pledged R5b towards developing the provincial Central Academic Hospital in the city, according to Limpopo Provincial Government.

These pledges were made two weeks ago during the third instalment of the Limpopo Investment Conference, held at The Ranch Resort on October 18-19.

The pledges totalled R37.5b, which exceeded the R30b target.

Once realised, this will augment the R4.5b budget set aside by National Treasury last year.

Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said this is one of five envisioned flagship hospitals in the country, which alone will employ around 2 000 locals and those from SADC regions in the construction phase alone.

He made this statement during the academic hospital’s sod-turning ceremony in July at the site next to Edu Park in Polokwane, where the state-of-the-art hospital is envisioned for completion in 2026. Jobs brought forth by the project reduce the city’s employment figures and will do so for the foreseeable future, as it stood at 20.07% based on statistics collected last year, as reported in a recent council meeting.

Meanwhile under the 2023 theme, Inclusive Economic Growth, funders expressed interest in the province’s agro-processing, infrastructure, automotive, mining exploration and beneficiation, green energy and tourism sectors.

In his closing remarks, Premier Chupu Mathabatha said the outcome of the conference gave him confidence in the effort to create employment, eradicate poverty and eliminate uneven development.
