Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a group of students and community members allegedly chased three men and cornered one while two managed to escape.

“The group assaulted the victim and left him with serious injuries and he succumbed to his injuries,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the motive for the incident is yet to be determined, although unconfirmed reports suggest that the victim was accused of stealing a cellphone from one of the students.

“At this stage, murder cases have been opened for investigation, but no arrest has been made,” he said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the alleged mob justice and urged the public to refrain from unlawful acts, including taking the law into their own hands.

“Report all suspected criminal activities to the police or recognised legal structures such as the Community Police Forum (CPF). Anyone with information that can assist in arresting the suspect(s) should contact the investigating officer Sergeant Ringani Rise on 072 170 6535, the crime stop number on 08600 10111, the nearest police station or via the MySAPSApp.
