IEC urges voters to register for 2024

It is important for people to check their registration status to ensure they're allocated at the relevant voting stations.

LIMPOPO – With the 2024 election looming, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has once again outlined the voter registration process.

To register as a voter, you must be 16 years or older but you will only be eligible to vote at age 18.

You need to be a South African citizen and be in possession of either a green barcoded ID, a temporary Identification certificate (TIC), or smart card ID.

There are easy ways to register, for example SMS your ID Number to 32810 and follow the prompts or visit their office on the corner of Hooge and Van Riebeeck streets.

There is also an online option to register at www.elections.org.za or you can register during the first and second registration weekends on November 18-19 and February 10-11, 2024.

Every ward has a voting district (VD), which is made up of voting stations (VS).

When a person registers to vote, they provide their residential address.

The system will then allocate the voter to their nearest voting station.

It is important for people to check their registration status to ensure they’re allocated at the relevant voting stations.

Citizens need to remember that the cut-off for registrations is at midnight of the day that the election date has been proclaimed by the president.

Since it is a national election, it is important for citizens to reregister in case they are going to vote in a different province than they did in the previous election.

Failure to do so will lead to a voter being denied the opportunity to cast their vote on the provincial ballot, but only be allowed on the national ballot paper, the IEC stipulated.
