POLOKWANE – The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has lauded the swift arrest of a 17-year-old boy involved in the carjacking and murder of a male e-hailing taxi driver.

The teenager was arrested in Ladanna on Tuesday following an intelligence-led operation by the Polokwane Crime Intelligence Unit in collaboration with Westenburg detectives.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect requested a Bolt metered taxi and along the way, stabbed the driver to death and burned and dumped the body near the newly developed site near the Place of Safety Shelter in Polokwane.

“The hijacked motor vehicle was found abandoned at a park in the Ladine area. The victim’s family will be notified soon,” his statement read.

Hadebe said the fact that the suspect is a minor is disturbing and called on the police to be relentless in tracing the remaining suspects in order for justice to be served.

Ledwaba confirmed that they are hot on the heels of the two other male suspects and that anyone with further information should contact the investigating officer Sergeant Braidon Pheme on 067 093 9828; at the nearest police station, via the crime stop number on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPSApp.

The minor suspect will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in due course following the completion of the diversion programme with a probation officer.
