Mankweng man arrested in connection with grandmother’s (97) murder
Police say the murder weapon used in the brutal killing of a 97-year-old woman in Ramogale Village was found in a pit toilet at a nearby tavern.
POLOKWANE – The police in Mankweng have made a major breakthrough in the murder case of a 97-year-old woman by arresting her grandson for the crime.
The 23-year-old suspect was arrested in the early hours of this morning in connection with the brutal murder of his grandmother in Ramogale Village, Ga-Mothapo on September 26.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the woman was attacked and stabbed to death with a sharp object in her home and her lifeless body was discovered by a relative.
“Upon initial investigations at the crime scene, the suspect(s) were alleged to be unknown by family members. The dedicated team of investigators cracked the case in no time and uncovered evidence that connected the victim’s grandson who was residing with the deceased. The suspect was arrested at the same residence the crime was committed in,” his statement read.
Ledwaba added that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect also robbed the deceased of a large amount of cash which she had been saving from her monthly social grants.
“Police managed to recover some of the cash hidden in the suspect’s bedroom and other exhibits which included the knife which was found inside a pit toilet at a nearby tavern,” he said.
The suspect will appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of murder and house robbery.
