Marvellous’ fish farm baits many opportunities

Marvellous Makhado started aquaculture (fish farming) back in 2018 and says it is an interesting career to venture into since it is simple to work with fish.

LIMPOPO – A dream does not become reality through magic, as is evident from Marvellous Makhado, owner of Roana Easy Farm who has made his dreams a reality by venturing into fish farming.

The 31-year-old from Tshaulu Tsha Ha Bohwana outside Thohoyandou in Vhembe started fish farming in 2018 and says he spends most of his time with the fish to ensure their well-being.

He feeds them, removes the eggs, and places them in a tunnel where they are fertilised, from where they are yet again moved to another tunnel.

Tshaulu says he is trying to show young people that you can achieve your dreams, no matter your situation.

“I want them to know that starting a business does not need much capital – you can start it and then grow it. But you won’t get anything done by sitting at home.

“My biggest goal for my business is to grow and supply big shops with fresh fish.

“I started aquaculture (fish farming) back in 2018. It is an interesting career to venture into since it is simple to work with fish.

“They don’t demand a lot, you just need to know what you are doing or what you need, and then you are good to go,” he said.

He told CV that the journey has been a marvellous one thanks to the support he receives from his family, the local community, and customers who give him a reason to keep going.

“When I was young, I always went to a nearby river to catch some fish and I developed a love for fish there.

“Doctors also recommend one consumes fish to stay healthy.”

The challenges are many, he said, and he still wants to secure land that is big enough to expand his operation.

“I also do not have enough resources, particularly finances, and I need to secure a sustainable market to sell my products.

“My family is so supportive – even when I am not around they know what to do and they encourage me to do my best.”
