Firearms and ammunition found during arrest of five in Polokwane

Five men were arrested in separate incidents on the N1 North and Savannah Mall and will be investigated to determine if they are positively linked to other crimes committed in Limpopo.

POLOKWANE – Five men between the ages of 29 and 33-years-old will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon facing separate charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The men were arrested during separate incidents in Polokwane on Tuesday following tip-offs to police and the provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has hailed the teams involved for their vigilance and commitment.

The first arrest was made on the N1 North by members of the Capricorn District Flying Squad who were dispatched by Modimolle police to be on the lookout for a suspicious male who was seen in a bank in the area.

“The man had already left the bank by the time the police arrived, however, a detailed description of the motor vehicle that he got into was provided to police who commenced an immediate search. The white sedan fitting the description was spotted on the N1 and was stopped and searched,” police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said.

Once searched, three suspects were arrested for possession of two firearms and ammunition that was concealed in the motor vehicle.

“While busy at the scene, the team received intelligence about another suspicious motor vehicle that was parked at Savannah Mall in Polokwane and they proceeded to the vicinity. Police tactically approached a white sedan with two males and it was searched,” Ledwaba said.

During the search, the police discovered ammunition in the vehicle and the duo were arrested on the spot.

“The two motor vehicles used for the commission of the crimes were seized during the arrests and investigations will be conducted to determine if the suspects are positively linked with other crimes that were committed across the province,” Ledwaba said.
