Limpopo traffic cops idle due to slow vehicle repairs

One traffic officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Louis Trichardt station was initially allocated 12 vehicles, but was now left with only one.

LIMPOPO – Provincial traffic officers at the Louis Trichardt centre say they have been unable to perform their duties for the last three weeks, sitting idle at the offices as their vehicles are at the government garage for repairs.

Officers say they don’t have enough vehicles to perform their duties and sit in their offices as many of the vehicles are unroadworthy.

One traffic officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Louis Trichardt station was initially allocated 12 vehicles, but was now left with only one.

“All the other vehicle have been taken to the government garage for repairs and we do not know when they will be returned for us to execute our jobs effectively.”

He said they report for duty each day, only sitting at the office.

“The service turnaround time is poor. We have internal workshops and external service providers who are delivering a poor and slow service”.

Transport Spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the department is aware of the temporary shortage of traffic law enforcement vehicles in Louis Trichardt.

“We are concerned about the inconvenience this is causing to the operations of the station and service delivery on the roads. Relevant teams at district and provincial office level are working towards speeding up repairs to get officers back on the roads again.”
