Final send-off for Limpopo traffic officer Sonia Moyana

Sonia Moyana (31) was killed on the R524 in Ximixoni village when a minibus hit both her and the light duty vehicle she was inspecting.

LIMPOPO – The Collins Chabane Mayor Shadrack Gezane Maluleke has described the late Sonia Hlanganani Moyana as a dedicated and humble traffic officer, a devoted colleague and a community servant.

Community members, traffic officers and staff of the Collins Chabane Municipality on Friday paid their last respects to Moyana who was laid to rest on Saturday after her tragic death on duty along the R524 in Ximixoni village.

Moyana was part of a group of young people recruited by the local municipality in July 2022 for a leadership programme. The recruits all graduated this July and started working as traffic officials in August.

Her funeral was held at the Collins Chabane and Malamulele community hall, with Maluleke highlighting how important it is to adhere to the rules of the road.

“Last month, we lost four lives among our staff. No family deserves such a tragedy, it is truly a violation of human rights.”

He called on all residents to be the eyes and ears of traffic officers on the road, and encouraged them to inform law enforcement officials every time they come across a situation that could potentially be fatal on the road.

“On behalf of the people of the Collins Chabane Municipality, Provincial Government and others, we convey our heartfelt condolences to her family. We appreciate the invaluable contribution you have made to the community of Collins Chabane and all our road users. There is nothing as devastating as the death of a loved one, a dedicated soldier, but what is more painful, is the pain of facing this devastation alone without your closest family members, friends or relatives. Our presence here is a reflection that we all loved your daughter, and this our attempt to soothe your pain,” Maluleke consoled her family.

MEC for Transport Florence Radzilani sent a message of condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues.

“We urge everyone to abide by the rules on our roads, treat our officers with respect, and avoid causing pain to others by being responsible on the road,” Radzilani said.
