POLOKWANE – A local resident’s boerewors recipe may just be what judges will be looking for in the upcoming Shoprite and Checkers Championship Boerewors competition.
Inspired to share her recipe with other South Africans, first-time entrant Mshasheni Mabotja from Rainbow Park is one of the top 10 finalists in this year’s competition.
After impressing an expert panel of judges from the South African Chefs Association over multiple rounds, Mabotja, who’s an aspirant spice and sauce entrepreneur, will be joining other contestants at the grand finale to be held in Cape Town at the Lourensford Market this Saturday.
The winning contestant in the competition will have their recipe’s wors featured in Shoprite and Checkers stores across the country from September 8.
This weekend, contestants will prepare and cook the boerewors in their own unique way for judges and food experts Zola Nene, Jeff Schueremans, James Khoza and Carmen Niehaus.
Mabotja told BONUS that should she win, she plans to invest the money into her business.
“It’s overwhelming and exciting at the same time to have made it to the top 10. I never thought I would make it this far in the competition on my first try. Being a girl from Polokwane, it feels great knowing that I’ll be representing my province and make my family proud,” Mabotja said.
She will be competing against nine other contestants from the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The first prize winner will walk away with a brand new Toyota Fortuner, the coveted title of 2023 Boerewors Champion and R20 000 cash; second prize winner wins R50 000 cash and third prize winner will receive R30 000.
The day of the competition will be a sizzling event that will tickle everyone’s taste buds and have them groove to the beats of great music by Mango Groove and Morgan Beatbox. This will be an unforgettable day where the new Championship Boerewors winner will be crowned.
