Giyani woman to face murder charge for death of 10-month old daughter

The woman (29) disclosed to police that she had buried her disabled child in a shallow grave and alleged the child died due to sickness.

LIMPOPO – A 29-year-old woman appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of murder and defeating the ends of justice following her arrest on Monday.

The woman was arrested after the body of her 10-month old daughter was found in a shallow grave in Giyani Section F.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspect is a landlord and left her house to visit her boyfriend on August 19. Her tenants began asking questions regarding the whereabouts of one of her children who suddenly disappeared.

“The tenants became suspicious and on Monday, searched the yard and noticed a shallow grave. The police were notified and traced the woman,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the woman disclosed that she had buried her disabled daughter in the shallow grave but indicated that the child died due to sickness and buried her alone as the child did not have a birth certificate.

“The child’s body was exhumed and the suspect was arrested. A postmortem to determine the cause of death is still to be conducted. Police investigations continue,” he said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and said the mother of the child was supposed to provide protection and is rather the main suspect.
