Amber’s hooked on stock car racing

Amber Molony is one of only a few female stock car racers in the city and participates in both the ladies' and normal stockrods.

POLOKWANE – During the week, Amber Molony works as a successful businesswoman in a male-dominated industry, namely that of generator spares and repairs.

On weekends, she fulfils the role of stock car racer, one of only a few woman racers in the city.

Apart from these two roles, she is also a wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend.

She is a therapist and counsellor, a teacher and a doctor. She is a woman, and one of many who are celebrated in Women’s Month.

Amber was introduced toc after her dad, Wessel Smit, bought a stockrod car and started to fix it up.

“My parents are co-owners of Unique Raceway and he took me for a spin around the raceway. I got hooked. He bought cars and built them up to suit our needs, making them faster and faster. Then I decided to race as well.”

Amber and a few other women are part of the Pinkrods, who work hard to beat the men during races.

Amber takes part in both the ladies’ stockrod and the normal stockrods.

“The best part of racing is the adrenalin. I am not an adrenalin junky, but when I get into the car, my blood starts pumping. The worst part is when you hit a wall. Normally you then need to rebuild your car.”

Amber’s husband, Ryan supports her, but is not a racer himself. Their four-year-old son, Cayden, is however very interested in the sport and his parents are looking to buying a ninja car for him.

“I would love him to also race. I have two sisters who are also not interested, but they support me every step of the way.”
