New sub-taxi rank in Ext 78 to only operate at certain times

Although residents have been informed about the sub-rank’s operating hours, they are not completely satisfied.

POLOKWANE – The new sub-taxi rank in Seshego’s ext 78 will only operate on weekdays between 08:00 and 10:00, according to the spokesperson of the Seshego Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA), Ally Mothiba.

Commuters in the area would often walk for roughly 4km to get to the main rank to be transported to their respective destinations in the city.

For years, taxis would not drive into the neighbourhood to fetch commuters at the recently established RDP and shacks section, which poses safety concerns for residents as they have to walk this route early in the morning or late at night.

After their meeting with the SPTA management about this and other matters in late July, Mothiba told BONUS that the association’s rank masters have heeded the “sound call” by commuters and expanded through a sub-rank since last Tuesday.

Although residents have been informed about the sub-rank’s operating hours, they are not completely satisfied.

“We understand that from 10:00 up to around 17:00, there is not much movement into the city from that portion of the township since many commuters are at work or school, but what about evenings and weekends? This arrangement does not resolve our safety concerns, especially for after work purposes and since darkness already falls around 18:00 in winter,” one commuter added.

Mothiba said drivers are off duty on weekends.

“The association therefore does not have enough vehicles and staff to take commuters directly to their preferred destinations across all of Seshego on those days,” he explained.

“We plead with our commuters to understand this and report any problems to our offices in the city whenever they arise,” Mothiba added.
