Limpopo police raise awareness to prevent drownings

More than 20 people drown in the Vhembe district every year and police appeal to the public to stay away from rivers, dams and places that are not designated for swimming.

LIMPOPO – To prevent further drownings and loss of life, the Vhembe police used World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25 to raise awareness around the issue in the area.

According to the Vhembe SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, more than 20 people drown in Vhembe every year.

He warned the public against the dangers of being around water such as rivers and dams.

He appealed to children not to play alongside streams and on riverbanks, or to swim unsupervised. He said that the police were very concerned, as more young people played around rivers and dams.

“Drowning is a global public health concern, and we are emphasising the importance of the ongoing global commitment to implementing preventive measures, and reminding people that while anyone can drown, no one should.”

He said they remained dedicated to enhancing water safety education in the area while police divers will also conduct water safety lessons in schools. “Drownings are on the increase, and most victims drown in rivers, streams or dams. Young people constitute a significant number of drownings,” said Dathi.

“We urge the public to stay away from rivers, dams and places that are not designated for swimming. Many people end up in the water while under the influence of alcohol. This hampers their judgement, and leads to loss of life. Parents must keep their children away from water if they don’t know how to swim. When you cross a river where the water reaches above your ankles, turn back and use an alternative route. Never try to walk, swim or drive in flowing water as it can sweep you off your feet. Do not drive over a low-water bridge if there is water flowing strongly across it,” he advised.
