Road Agency Limpopo sets R39m aside to upgrade access roads

RAL has allocated R39m for the improvement of access roads and enhancing travel experiences in Mavhunga and Phadzima.

LIMPOPO – Completion of the 3.7km D3669 between Mavhunga and Phadzima from gravel to tar is expected at the end of June 2024.

The project started in June this year, and is part of a comprehensive plan announced by Nkakareng Rakgoale, the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in the 2023/24 budget speech.

A total of 14 individuals from the local community have been employed in the project, which aimed to empower small local businesses too, the MEC added.

Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) has allocated R39m for the improvement of access roads, enhancing the travel experience for motorists and improving connectivity in the area.

Communication manager Luyanda Sithole said they had initiated seven upgrade projects in the current financial year, with a focus on converting gravel roads into tarred surfaces.

Sithole emphasised that RAL recognised the importance of road maintenance and upgrades in meeting the transportation needs of the people of Limpopo.

Sithole explained that the first phase of the project involves a stretch of just over three kilometres of road.

“Local community members and motorists have expressed concern about the road’s condition for some time now. They will also receive skills training to support themselves after the project’s completion.”

A local taxi driver, Phalandwa Phalandwa, who operates between Nzhelele and Louis Trichardt daily, said he welcomes the project.

“We have been waiting for a long time. Besides extending the lifespan of our vehicles, it will make our lives easier as we can travel from one place to another without worrying about the road’s poor condition,” he said.
