POLOKWANE – The police in Giyani have launched a manhunt for an unknown group of suspects following the murder of a 36-year-old man on Saturday afternoon.

The man was shot and killed along the gravel road towards the Hlaneki mine.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the victim, identified as Obey Ngoveni, was driving a bakkie alongside two passengers en route to collect firewood in the Hlaneki village when the suspects emerged and fired shots at the vehicle.

“The suspects drove off in a sky blue Toyota Corolla. The driver sustained gun shot wounds and the passenger escaped unhurt,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said it is alleged that Ngoveni was hired to fetch firewood in the area and was declared dead on the scene by police and emergency personnel who found him in the vehicle.

“The police have opened a case of murder for further investigation and the motive for the attack and killing of the victim is still unknown,” he said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe called on the community to assist by providing information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.
