Community safety’s spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene said areas with high traffic volumes at peak times often have more pointsmen than others.

In Potgieter Avenue, motorists will have noticed four officers directing traffic near Tom Naudé Technical High School in the mornings and afternoons on weekdays.

This also applies at the Percy Fyfe T- junction on the Matlala road near the Westenburg bridge into the city, and in parts of Nelson Mandela Drive.

Chuene says in situations where the traffic flow is neutral, a point is usually controlled only by two officers, “to allow them to interchange”.

Another cohort will be trained once the existing contracts come to an end.
